ABOUT THE FESTIVAL & AUTHOR SERIES
A Brief History
The book festival was founded in 2005 as an outgrowth of the Chilmark Community Center's evening lecture series. Suellen Lazarus founded the festival after running the evening lecture series for a number of years and seeing the National Book Festival in Washington, DC. Suellen and the Community Center agreed that Martha’s Vineyard needed a book festival, too. The Chilmark Town Affairs Council, a 501(c) 3 organization responsible for overseeing activities of the Chilmark Community Center, supports the festival and provides many of its volunteers. Bunch of Grapes, the island's beloved independent bookstore, was also a founding partner. The Vineyard Gazette has been the festival's stalwart media sponsor from the beginning producing a beautiful supplement for each festival.
At the first festival, all the authors were local, the programming included children's and young adult books, and when Judy Blume agreed to speak, we knew we were onto something. The first festival was run in partnership and with support from the Chilmark Free Public Library. The festival now features authors from across the country who travel to the island to participate in the festival. It has gained a national reputation with authors and publishers, and we now limit our programming to newly published adult fiction and non-fiction in a range of genres. We also have gathered a distinguished Advisory Board who guide the author selection and programming processes. But, the festival remains free.
In 2012, the Martha's Vineyard Author Series was officially launched and branded on the alternate years of the Martha's Vineyard Book Festival. It features a world class group of authors speaking to sold out crowds at the Chilmark Community Center on Thursday and Sunday evenings throughout the summer.
Martha’s Vineyard Book Festival
The Martha’s Vineyard Book Festival is a biennial, multi-day literary celebration held every other summer on the first weekend of August on the island of Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts. Founded in 2005, the festival brings together nationally and internationally recognized authors for panel discussions on topical issues, author talks and book signings. As a free festival in the height of the summer it provides an immersive weekend of community engagement with some of the country's thought leaders and literary stars.
Martha’s Vineyard Author Series
The Martha’s Vineyard Author Series is held in the alternating years of the Martha's Vineyard Book Festival. Rather than a concentrated festival weekend, it features 6-8 individual author events spread across the summer season. Held at several venues on Martha's Vineyard and generally on Thursday or Sunday evenings, the Author Series provides an immersive event with one author or in a panel discussion with several authors on a cutting edge issue. The featured author's book is included in the ticket price for the event.
MV Book Festival/ MV Author Series is now on Goodreads. See all of the featured books back through 2017, follow us, track your reading, support our authors, connect with other readers. Fun!

Here on the Vineyard ... there is a chance to rekindle that bond thanks to the Martha’s Vineyard Book Festival, where readers and authors leave the page and spend time together in real life, listening, asking questions, learning and being inspired anew.”
